#atozchallenge - Kids should not be allowed on your computer.

Before I get shit about "oh, it's so good for kids to learn on" and what not, I'm not saying they should not be taught, I'm saying that if you take a computer home from your place of employment, don't let your kids play with it. We know you do it, and you know who you are! I know about half of you are twiddling your thumbs, whistling tunelessly right now. Cut the shit.

I cannot begin to explain how many freakin facebook-born viruses and "free" video games, and corrupt spongebob screen savers I've had to remove from WORK computers over the years. NOW, I don't mind so much, cause I bill by the hour, but back when I was "in house" it would drive me nucking futs. I had projects to take care of, real things to get done without having to clean up fucking Wizard 101 crap.

Your work computer is not a toy, it's a tool! You think a carpenter comes home and let's his kids play around with his nail gun? You think cops walk in the door and drop their god damned gun belt into the play pen?

Protect your work computer. Keep it safe, keep it clean. Just because you didn't buy it doesn't mean it was free, and just because you have an I.T. department doesn't mean fixing it is going to be no problem. It could mean the difference between you hitting your deadlines or not, and if you don't, it's not the I.T. department's fault.

...Unless they suck of course, in which case, maybe it is.

  1. Not a fan of the language, but then again it's not all that bad--I've seen far more offensive. Your point is a good one and well made.

    1. Yeah. The language is why you wont find my real name here. Sometimes when venting there is no substitute, I find. Could just be me. :)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. If I'd tried to take my work computer home I'd have needed a trolley! Laptops have a lot to answer for. And in case you're wondering, I only retired 12 years ago. It's all very well for you IT types who can keep up with the latest trends - we stay-at-home types are struggling to stay on the damn train!

    1. Yeah, It's different for us. If we can't keep up with the newest, we get left behind.

  3. The best way to get these people back is to re-image the system, and explain that was the only way to recover it.

    1. Yep. Now that I'm a consultant, that's a four hour proposal. Before it was just a big inconvenience for everyone.

  4. I love the title of your blog and especially your honesty. My husband is an IT guy, and I've learned so much from him, I think I've turned into an IT girl.

    Thanks!

  5. This post really cracked me up! The visuals of kids playing with the tools of various trades were hilarious.

I found your blog on the A to Z list; it's nice to meet you.

  6. Because of the fact that I'm not an IT guy (but rather a fellow who knows enough to get the job done most of the time), I have been known to take several days to adequately clean up a home computer after kids had turned it into a paper weight.

  7. I have a friend who works in the IT field and would probably LOVE this post! Your points are well made, especially the whole carpenter/cop analogy. The same issues with people not taking care of their work computers could be said about the education sector as well. If a school provides a laptop for it's students to take home to complete their assignments, then there is no reason that a child should be playing Angry Bird on it and downloading Justin Bieber wallpapers all day long. It's pure nonsense.

    Cheers!

  8. Big fan of common sense myself. Not much for venting, as I'd rather crochet or work in the garden when I need to spout off. My kids know the drill...if you're not gonna use your brain, you're gonna use your back. Beats cussing and having those words come back to haunt me when they're said in front of grandma by my kids, common sensibly speaking, that is:)

  9. Agreedf whole heartedly. Good thing I don't have kids.

  10. You should add cats, too. My husband had to deal with an employee whose cat urinated on her work laptop. She was reluctant (imagine that?) to tell him the truth about her computer problem. He eventually pulled the reason out of her.

  11. Lol! I knew from the title of your blog that I would get a kick out of your posts. Stopping by from A to Z.

  12. So true. I cannot tell you how many people I know who have this problem with their kids, yet they don't get the best products to clean their computers.

  13. LOL; visiting from A/Z; I see you are a big behind with the challenge, hope all is well. Totally agree with you; it is the work computer, it should be used for the purpose of work. I work at home on a work computer, I use it (mostly) strictly for work; I have been known to look up my bank account info on it on occasion, but otherwise it is just work relted.

enjoy the week and the rest of the challenge :)

  14. My toddler knows what he's allowed to touch and what he's not. He has his own "computer" that he can do whatever he wants with. Enjoy your week off with your family!

  15. So true, and I count my own personal computer in that list as well. I write, pay bills, etc. on mine, and I don't want weird crap on it. When he's allowed to play, it's on a computer dedicated to kid's stuff.
